Small Living Rooms

Choose furniture that can do double duty like this ottoman.

Two trays quickly take an oversize ottoman from a casual put-your-feet-up piece to one fit for formal entertaining

Hide your clutter in undercover storage units.

For an inexpensive take on a coffee table that's flexible to move and packs hidden storage, try a pair of cubes. Children's toys can be stashed inside these wicker models for easy access and they look great in almost any room.

Use artwork to add big style to a small room.

Give artwork extra sizzle against light-reflecting white walls by layering it on top of an inexpensive painted artist's canvas.

Stick with the same colors.

Subtle tone-on-tone patterns add interest to the draperies, area rug, and sofa upholstery in this living room without making the space feel busy. "See-through" legs on the sofa, side tables, and coffee table also help keep the room's feel open and airy.

Stacking accessories can add visual interest and contain the clutter

Get creative with your artwork.

Pieces of architectural salvage add instant character to rooms, but they can be difficult to frame. Here, a painted border cleverly showcases two old ceiling tiles, turning a small corner into an attractive focal point.

Certain window treatments can make a room look bigger.

Swing-arm-rod draperies make light work of creating privacy by night and framing views by day in this living room. Symmetrically arranged furnishings and matching sets of side tables and chairs underscore the sense of calm and order

Choose lower furniture that will complement the size of the room.

The success of many small living rooms relies on smart furnishings. A pair of low chairs allows an uninterrupted view through this apartment while providing a chat-friendly seating arrangement.

Use rugs to separate the spaces.

Conquer a long, narrow living room by breaking the space into two separate seating areas.

This room is set apart by its bold artwork and colorfully vibrant floral. These bright colors are able to pop with the backdrop of cool white chairs and ebony furnishings and flooring. The lighting is also light and fresh with oversized shades and a mod, urban look.Design Tip: The Wow factor in this room is not just from the artwork and flowers, but also the important contrast in dark-white colors on the chairs, walls and baseboards.

The spiral chandelier echoes the round shape of the dining table in this dining room. Decorative elements like the glass sculptures and the round plant pots also contain round shapes. Repetition is a way to create a unified space.

The dark wooden dining room set instantly attracts the eye, and the metallic light fixture adds a modern touch while the beautiful pebbles inserted below the table’s glass top bring the outdoors in.

The dining room reveals the continuation of the quality details like the chandelier featured in this shot. Balancing the size of the dining set and the pattern of the wallpaper in the dining area achieves a look of unexpected grandness.

Our goal for this project was to transform a cold yet architecturally significant space into a warm, inviting home featuring artistic, high-end furniture, rugs and lighting. All pieces were to be authentic, unique and interesting, yet very comfortable.

2013 Modern Neutral Living Rooms Decorating Ideas

Modern living room style is all about minimalism and neutrality. Clean lines and simple color schemes are the order of the day for a modern living room. The base colors of the room should all remain neutral, but you can work a few bold, simple colors into accents and accessories. Angular pieces are also standard to the modern  living room style, but round circular pieces may also be found from time to time. Use a

neutral color palette. Modern living room style is fairly minimalist, even down to the color scheme. A base color scheme should consist of neutral colors, including white, beige, and black. This allows the accessories and furnishings to draw the eye more effectively.

Keep things light. Modern living rooms typically have a lot of light flowing in. Large windows that allow sunlight to stream in at an angle are best, but sources of artificial light are just as important. Choose lights that give off a bright, blue white glow instead of bulbs with a yellow white glow.

This room, though dramatic on the surface, is very simple and cost effective. The walls are painted in wide stripes, which quickly give the room a lot of interest. The furnishings are straight lined, bordering on modern. The textured rug, highly coordinated accessories, glass desk and great chandelier add the finishing touches.

In the grand salon, the ceilings were improved with artful soffits to create soft curves, which are also reflected in the furnishings and rug. The walls were dressed with an unexpected horizontal staggered line tile and wave panel resin material. A beautiful bar was design and built for entertaining. Two conversation areas were laid out in the grand salon. The sofas are a deep chocolate mohair and paired with classic egg chairs and a custom entertainment console dressed with oversized hardware and ostrich leather.Design Tip: Walls don’t have to be painted or papered. Think about tiles, even in a living room.

Earthy tones combine this open space as living room, dining room and kitchen, giving a cozy ambiance.

The ebonized floors and stark white walls provided the perfect backdrop for furnishings in a palette of warm earth tones and various types of wood. The room was divided into two seating areas, with the primary area containing the sofa, chaise and two club chairs surrounding the SPI LINE Blanco Coffee Table whose nickel plated frame...

To enhance the 11-foot ceiling and the flood of natural light from the large windows in the living area, 8-inch oak molding that surrounded all of the windows was removed, as was the ornamental crown and base molding that existed throughout the apartment. SPI opted to divide the living area from the dining area with large cube towe...

The textural elements of the stone fireplace and shaggy rug, along with hints of apple green, keep this modern space from feeling too sterile.

A cozy family room was created by installing a central chandelier to bring down the height of the ceiling. Additionally, the designer added a sleek shelf around the room for the owner to display his own photographs. Custom iron floor lamps, dramatic drapery and woven shades add texture add warmth to the room. Even though.

The way to get maximum impact from an area rug is to use it as the "soul of your room". The color scheme, furniture placement and accessories should all connect back to it.

Green Living Rooms

Designers normally use the following lines for the client pitch if they are to favour the colour green:

Green is life. Abundant in nature, green signifies growth, renewal, health, and environment.

But if they want the client to move away from green, they would suggest that green signifies jealousy, envy and inexperience! Anyways, we thought it’s been a while since we featured a set based on colours. We will get that out of our conscience with this post on green living rooms.

Asian Living Rooms

Marrying simple pieces with soft neutral colors gave this place warmth and fluidity. Sometimes it's just the little things that really make the difference. Here, simple window treatments and lush exotic pillows combine to add a subtle Asian influence with an overall result that is casual, comfortable, sophisticated and inviting. This design began with a breathtaking antique Japanese screen with a striking wisteria motif. The gnarled branch of the black vine is emphasized by the black lacquered furniture and accessories and reinforced through the dark-on-light palette. Clean lines and luxurious fabrics complete the design, resulting in a truly timeless spac... A subtle Asian influence is reflected in this living room. The interest is found in the blocks of color and the variety of textures. A two-sided Venetian Plaster fireplace wall also holds a recessed plasma screen. Use different types of seating for a more sophisticated look. The sofas and chairs don't always have to be a maternity set. Consider a large ottoman for double duty or extra seating. Make your living room style complementary to the rest of your home so there is visual continuity.

In spite of the Zen-type minimalist, Asian style, in modern life beautiful ornate and very opulent items can be included in a design. Keep a room uncluttered with minimal furnishings.

This living room combines surreal and earthy elements with vibrant color for a stylish and unexpected effect.

Inspired by the antique Japanese screen and punctuated with a red leather coffee table, this classically modern space embodies balance and harmony. The walls, hand-painted to resemble linen, are the perfect backdrop for the natural fibers that are used exclusively in the room.

The coffee table in this living room has a beautiful wedge wood finish which makes a chic, exotic statement in the room.
